Introduction

LINE is the UK's first local Islamic environmental group. Open to people of all faiths and beliefs, we aim to provide a safe, yet stimulating and enjoyable forum in which dialogue can take place, assumptions can be reflected on, and ideas developed. As we develop a better understanding of the issues as well as of ourselves, we might feel that we would like to take our work to the level of action.

With conscious individuals coming together, the monthly forums provide a setting in which grounded grassroots activities can begin to be developed, for those who wish to take the work forward. For others, the sharing and development of one's ideas and reflections, or simply just listening will feel sufficient. Our forums thus cater for both activists and non-activists.

LINE's activities and methods: An overview

Our activities are diverse, and we use a variety of approaches and methods:

  • A Transformative Approach: Space for deep dialogue, enquiry and reflection, allowing the collective wisdom to also emerge. We also recognise the existence of egoism, taking precaution against its influences, and are mindful that our processes mirror that of the world we wish to live in.

  • Educational Events: Delivering talks and participative workshops, or exhibiting a photoexhibition.

These have been delivered in a diverse range of settings such as Islamic events, activist meetings, mosques, community centres, inter-faith gatherings, schools and universities. Topics have included: Islam & ecology, Islam & wastefulness/consumerism, climate change, and how to develop strong networks, for example.

  • Environmental Justice Activities: Climate change marches, campaigning for the implementation of a strong Climate Change Bill and coordinating media stunts.

  • Social Events & Nature Outings: E.g. Organic picnics and ecology outings, providing opportunities to sense, connect with, and learn from nature.

As each group and network has its own unique strengths, it can often be more effective to combine one's efforts with others. Along with a creative and contemplative approach, this can allow even small groups to catalyse big changes. LINE is fluid, and whilst remaining autonomous and working within it's own ethos, it also cooperates with a diverse range of organisations and individuals. This fluidity helps to simultaneously develop understanding between different social groups, helping to contribute to a more cohesive and peaceful society.
